If reports from New Delhi are any indication, the days of Telangana Endowments and Forests Minister Konda Surekha in Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s cabinet may be numbered.
Revanth Reddy left for New Delhi on Tuesday morning and is expected to hold discussions with the Congress high command on the latest developments in the party, particularly the controversies surrounding Konda Surekha and State Planning Board Vice-Chairman G Chinna Reddy.
The Chief Minister is likely to meet Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on Wednesday. During these meetings, he is expected to discuss the report submitted by the Pradesh Congress Committee’s disciplinary committee on Surekha and Chinna Reddy.
Congress sources indicated that the party high command may take a decision on the issue.
“There is a strong possibility that action could be taken against both leaders based on the disciplinary committee’s report,” sources said.
A Congress leader said Revanth Reddy has taken serious note of Surekha’s daughter Sushmita Patel’s comments against him and his government, as well as the minister’s silence over those remarks.
“He will press for strong action against Surekha and her removal from the State cabinet,” the leader said.
Sources said that while Revanth Reddy may take some time to decide on a broader cabinet expansion and the induction of new ministers, he is unlikely to soften his stand on the issue involving Surekha.
Though a couple of senior ministers and other Congress leaders are understood to have approached the State party in-charge seeking to prevent disciplinary action against Surekha, no assurance was reportedly given to them.
The final decision is expected to depend largely on the discussions Revanth Reddy has with the Congress high command in Delhi.
Party sources said there could still be a change in the situation if the central leadership succeeds in persuading the Chief Minister to reconsider his position.
In the absence of such an intervention, however, the possibility of Konda Surekha being dropped from the Telangana cabinet is reportedly high.
The developments have assumed significance as the Congress leadership attempts to resolve internal differences while maintaining discipline within the State unit.
